Formula 1 has officially unveiled its 2027 calendar, featuring a groundbreaking sprint race at Monaco for the first time. The move marks a new chapter for the sport's most iconic Grand Prix, even as the circuit's narrow streets pose an extreme challenge for overtaking.
After weeks of delays, F1 and the FIA finally published the schedule on Wednesday morning. Geopolitical tensions between the US and Iran had cast doubt, but F1 opted to stick with its original plan: starting the season in the Middle East. Bahrain and Saudi Arabia remain the opening two rounds on March 14 and 21, respectively.
This decision aligns with F1's long-standing tactic of delaying calls on the viability of races in the region until the last possible moment. The fate of this year's season-ending races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi is still uncertain and is expected to be decided within the next week or so, potentially even later.
If Bahrain and Saudi Arabia cannot host races as scheduled, F1 is understood to be considering bringing forward the Australian, Chinese, and Japanese Grands Prix to open the campaign. Australia is reportedly increasingly optimistic about hosting an earlier race, though construction of a new pits and paddock complex is still ongoing.
The 2027 calendar also confirms Portugal's return at Portimao on June 20 as a standalone event, and Turkey's comeback as the middle leg of a triple-header with Azerbaijan and Singapore. Las Vegas remains a standalone on November 20, followed by a two-week break before the final races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi.
But the biggest surprise is the Monaco sprint. The principality's street circuit, notorious for its lack of overtaking opportunities, will now host a sprint race. F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali emphasized that this innovation is part of efforts to deliver spectacle without sacrificing tradition.
With a mix of legendary circuits and new formats, the 2027 season promises a different dynamic. Fans are eager to see how Formula 1 manages the logistical and competitive challenges amid global uncertainty.
