FIA, alongside Formula 1 and the Miami Grand Prix promoter, has officially moved the start time of the 2026 race forward in response to the threat of thunderstorms. The decision aims to minimise disruption while maintaining the highest safety standards.
The race, originally scheduled for 16:00 local time, will now begin at 13:00. The adjustment followed discussions after qualifying, taking into account forecasts predicting worsening storm conditions later in the afternoon.
"This decision has been taken to ensure minimal disruption and maximise the opportunity to complete the race in the best possible conditions while prioritising safety."

In addition to the revised start time, several support events have been adjusted, including the cancellation of the Porsche Carrera Cup North America race. However, the Formula 2 feature race remains on the schedule.
From a regulatory standpoint, severe weather such as lightning triggers strict safety protocols. Under United States law, outdoor sporting events must be suspended immediately if lightning is detected within a specified radius, followed by a minimum 30-minute delay.
The FIA has also outlined detailed procedures if such conditions occur during the starting sequence or race. In these scenarios, cars must return to the team garages, and the start procedure will be reset once conditions are deemed safe.
If the risk arises during the race itself, the event can be suspended, with all cars returning to the pit lane in accordance with sporting regulations. These measures are designed to protect drivers, teams, and personnel at all times.
The schedule change has both operational and strategic implications, particularly with the likelihood of rapidly changing track conditions. Adaptability to weather variables is set to be a decisive factor in the outcome of the 2026 Miami Grand Prix.
