The starting grid for the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix 2026 Sprint has been revised following a late intervention from the FIA, which penalised Alex Albon for a track limits breach that was not detected in real time during SQ1. The decision has reshaped the lower order and raised further scrutiny over officiating processes.
Lando Norris of McLaren will start from Sprint pole position after a dominant SQ3 performance, with Kimi Antonelli securing a front-row slot for Mercedes. The front of the grid reflects the competitive momentum of both teams in Miami.
Behind them, Oscar Piastri and Charles Leclerc form the second row, while Max Verstappen and George Russell occupy the third. Lewis Hamilton starts seventh, highlighting the tight spread among the leading teams.

The penalty drops Albon to 19th on the grid, significantly altering the competitive picture in the midfield. Meanwhile, Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll have been permitted to start despite failing to set competitive times in SQ1, following a stewards’ dispensation based on practice performance.

The adjusted grid introduces new strategic variables, particularly for midfield runners aiming to gain positions in the opening laps. With limited overtaking opportunities and no mandatory pit stops, initial track position and launch performance will be decisive factors.
Although the grid remains provisional pending final confirmation from the FIA, it already provides a clear framework for how the Sprint Race is expected to unfold at the Miami Grand Prix.
