The 2026 Mexico City Grand Prix weekend is rapidly approaching, bringing with it a potential historic milestone as Andrea Kimi Antonelli stands on the verge of clinching his maiden world championship at just 20 years of age. Before the championship tension peaks at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, the Formula 1 paddock will first witness an unprecedented wave of young talent taking to the track.
During the opening practice session, no fewer than eight teams will field rookie drivers, creating a unique spectacle in the season. Notably, Ferrari remains the only outfit on the grid choosing to field their regular race drivers from the very first minute of the weekend, while the rest of the grid opens the door for rising stars.
Italian fans will have plenty to cheer for as Leonardo Fornaroli steps into the McLaren seat normally occupied by Lando Norris, alongside compatriot Gabriele Mini who makes his long-awaited F1 weekend debut with Alpine. Further debutants include Freddie Slater with Audi and Nikola Tsolov driving for Racing Bulls.

Mercedes has handed a practice outing to Frederik Vesti in place of George Russell, while Aston Martin continues its evaluation of Jak Crawford. Williams relies on Luke Browning, Red Bull gives Ayumu Iwasa the chance to pilot Max Verstappen's car, and both Colton Herta for Cadillac and Ryo Hirakawa for Haas round out the massive rookie presence in FP1.
This massive influx of young drivers highlights the growing importance of junior academy programs as the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship enters its most critical and thrilling final stretch of the season.
