Mercedes once again asserted their dominance at the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku, with George Russell emerging as the star. This victory was no fluke; it was the perfect blend of the W17's characteristics and Russell's aggressive yet precise driving style.
The Baku circuit, with its long straights and tight corners, seemed tailor-made for Mercedes. Russell maximized the car's potential, especially in energy management and braking. Meanwhile, Red Bull once again showcased the might of their Honda RBPT power unit, though they couldn't match Mercedes' pace in the technical sectors.
On the other side, Ferrari had to swallow a bitter pill. The SF-26 continues to grapple with aerodynamic balance and tyre degradation issues that hamper Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz. The Maranello outfit struggled to find an ideal setup on a street circuit that demands stability and high traction.

McLaren, bringing a substantial upgrade package, took a cautious approach. They refrained from drawing conclusions from Baku's performance, given the track's unique nature. The papaya team will evaluate the effectiveness of their updates in Malaysia, where tyre degradation management and energy efficiency will be decisive, unlike Baku.
Technical analysis from experts indicates that Mercedes has successfully optimized their hybrid system and cooling, while Ferrari remains bogged down with mechanical issues. Red Bull, though strong on straights, couldn't match Mercedes' cornering speed. McLaren could become a threat if their upgrades work as hoped.
With this result, the championship battle intensifies. Mercedes send a strong signal that they are not ready to relinquish their crown, while Ferrari must find solutions quickly to stay in the fight. Red Bull and McLaren will certainly not stand still.
The Malaysian Grand Prix will be the true test for all teams. The Sepang circuit, with its high downforce demands and precise tyre management, will reveal who is truly ready for the rest of the 2026 season.
