McLaren believes it has taken a significant step forward following a strong sprint qualifying performance in Miami 2026, where Lando Norris secured pole position and Oscar Piastri qualified third. The result highlights the immediate impact of the MCL40 upgrade package on single-lap pace.
This progress comes after an inconsistent start to the season, including a difficult weekend in China where neither car started the race. With a comprehensive aerodynamic revision now in place, McLaren appears to have improved overall car balance, particularly in qualifying scenarios that demand precise tyre management and aerodynamic consistency.
Despite the improvement, competition remains tight, as Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes split the two McLarens with a final lap effort. This underlines the narrow performance margins at the front and the importance of execution in decisive moments.

"The car has been great for both drivers, and the first phase of our development upgrades has shown promising signs. To achieve pole and third on the sprint grid is a strong step forward."
Technical director Neil Houldey credited the collective effort across departments, from aerodynamics and design to manufacturing and trackside operations. This reflects a fully integrated development approach, ensuring that each component contributes effectively to overall performance gains.
Strategically, McLaren is capitalising on this momentum before Mercedes introduces its own upgrades at the Canadian Grand Prix. This creates an opportunity to maximise points in both the sprint and main race while holding a temporary advantage.
"The pace is encouraging and the execution has been excellent. The focus now is on converting this step into results while continuing to extract further performance from the package."
With momentum building, McLaren is now positioned to challenge more consistently at the front. However, sustaining this performance will depend on continued technical development and the team’s ability to respond to rival upgrades as the 2026 season progresses.
