McLaren has strongly defended its controversial decision to start the 2026 Canadian Grand Prix on intermediate tyres despite the strategy ultimately delivering a disappointing outcome. Team principal Andrea Stella insisted the call was the correct one based on the conditions at the time the decision was made rather than the result that followed once the race got underway.

Starting from the second row of the grid, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri were the only leading contenders to opt for intermediate tyres as light rain continued to fall around Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Most of their direct rivals chose slick tyres despite the damp and slippery conditions around the Montreal venue.

Initially, the strategy appeared highly promising. Norris surged into the lead when the race finally started. However, circumstances quickly shifted after Arvid Lindblad failed to complete the opening formation lap, triggering an aborted start procedure and forcing two additional formation laps. The extra time allowed the circuit to dry much faster than McLaren had anticipated.

Stella explained that the tyre decision had to be made approximately seven minutes before the scheduled start. At that point, the team believed track grip levels were deteriorating and rain was still affecting sections of the circuit. Based on the available information, intermediate tyres represented the safest option for the opening phase of the race while reducing the risk associated with cold slick tyres.

"In our view, the track was already greasy and it was difficult to keep temperature in the tyres. When the decision needed to be made, the conditions justified fitting the intermediate tyre," Stella said.

According to Stella, the rapid weather change became the decisive factor. The rain stopped only minutes after the tyre choice was finalised, while the additional formation laps gave the surface enough time to evolve from damp to almost completely dry. As a result, the natural advantage of the intermediate tyre disappeared before the race entered its competitive phase.

The consequences were reflected in the final result. Piastri was forced to pit early for slick tyres before later receiving a penalty following contact with Alex Albon. The Australian eventually finished 11th. Norris, despite leading early, failed to reach the chequered flag due to what is believed to have been a gearbox issue, ending McLaren's hopes of securing a major result in Canada.

From a strategic perspective, McLaren argues the decision should be evaluated using the information available at the time rather than through hindsight. Stella even suggested that had the rain continued for only a few more minutes or the race started according to schedule, the drivers on slick tyres could have encountered significant difficulties. Nevertheless, the Canadian Grand Prix demonstrated how quickly changing weather conditions and unexpected procedural delays can completely alter the strategic landscape in Formula 1, a factor that may continue to influence the championship fight involving Norris, Piastri and their rivals in the coming rounds.
