Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Max Verstappen has once again ignited speculation over his Formula 1 future after delivering a sharp critique of the sweeping 2026 regulations during pre-season testing in Bahrain.
The four-time world champion was outspoken in his assessment of the new-generation cars, suggesting they risk turning F1 into “Formula E on steroids” and describing aspects of the regulations as “anti-racing”. It marked the latest instance of Verstappen publicly questioning the sport’s direction despite being one of its defining figures over the past decade.
The Red Bull Racing driver has previously voiced frustration over the expanding calendar, now at 24 races, as well as the continued growth of sprint events, which could increase to 12 weekends per season. For Verstappen, enjoyment remains central to his long-term commitment to F1, and he has openly stated that other racing categories could offer similar fulfillment.
When asked directly whether the new rules could influence his decision to remain in F1, Verstappen responded with a cautious “let’s see”, reiterating that he competes primarily to enjoy racing rather than simply to participate.
F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali moved quickly to downplay the speculation, expressing confidence that Verstappen will not walk away at the end of the season and will continue into 2027 and beyond.
To gauge public sentiment, a RacingNews365 poll asked fans whether they believed Verstappen would leave F1 after the 2026 campaign. The results revealed a divided outlook.
While 41.94% of respondents predicted he would depart at season’s end, a clear majority of 58.06% sided with Domenicali, believing the Dutchman will remain on the grid regardless of his current frustrations.
As Formula 1 enters a new regulatory era, Verstappen’s long-term trajectory remains one of the sport’s most closely watched storylines — both on and off the track.
