Max Verstappen Slams F1 2026 For Holding Sprint Races At Tracks Where Overtaking Is Impossible

Verstappen has questioned the logic behind the location of some sprint races

Max Verstappen has strongly criticised Formula 1's decision to hold sprint races at circuits where passing is virtually impossible throughout the competitive racing weekend.

The four-year world champion recently secured victory in a chaotic, incident-packed sprint race at the Singapore Grand Prix, finishing ahead of Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton after Mercedes driver George Russell crashed out of the lead on the second lap.

This event marked the inaugural sprint race held in Singapore, as F1 rotated host venues for the six sprint formats scheduled in 2026. Aside from heavy downpours delaying the start, there was minimal overtaking action, particularly at the sharp end of the grid.

"I think we shouldn't host a sprint where you can't pass," stated Verstappen, who remains the most successful driver in the sprint race format with 14 career victories.

The Dutchman further highlighted that current technical regulations regarding energy deployment and batteries offer little assistance on straights, preventing drivers from gaining a massive overspeed delta to execute clean passes.

Echoing similar sentiments, home favorite Charles Leclerc—who finished third—questioned F1's logic to expand sprints to 10 events in 2027, including a controversial stop at Monaco's tight street circuit.

"I don't think it makes sense to have any sprint races on city tracks in general," Leclerc concluded.
