Max Verstappen claimed his first Singapore Grand Prix win as Ferrari squandered a potential double-podium result by fumbling Lewis Hamilton's race strategy under the Marina Bay lights.
Saturday's sprint race winner Verstappen had been the class of the field through the entire weekend. Having resisted Charles Leclerc off the line and through the opening laps, the Dutchman steadily increased his advantage, particularly around the timing of the crucial first pitstops.
As Verstappen extended his opening stint, attention rapidly turned to the red garage once both of their cars had serviced. Leclerc retained position through the stops, but that transition put him onto the medium compound tyre, with Hamilton in hot pursuit running on the significantly faster soft rubber.

Hamilton complained over the team radio first of losing two seconds on one lap and then insisting he needed to deploy his raw pace. However, the pit wall did not order a position swap until Leclerc eventually began to eke out a gap.
The race was completely flipped on lap 39 when a virtual safety car afforded the leaders a cheap stop. While Leclerc took fresh softs, Hamilton stayed out to gain track position, leaving himself horribly exposed to a 21-lap tyre-age disadvantage that ultimately ruined his race and triggered a dramatic late-race slump, prompting a post-race apology from the Briton taking full blame for the call.
