Four-time Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen has once again proven that he prefers racing over resting during a rare weekend off in motorsport. Sandwiched right between demanding triple-headers in the premier single-seater category, the Dutch ace is shifting his focus entirely to endurance sports car racing.
This weekend marks a high-profile return for Verstappen behind the wheel of the number 3 Mercedes-AMG GT3 fielded by his own Verstappen.com Racing outfit. The event serves as the grand finale of the 2026 GT World Challenge Europe season, taking place at the sweeping and undulating circuit of Portimao in Portugal.
His entry immediately sparked immense excitement among motorsport fans, raising the tantalizing prospect of an on-track wheel-to-wheel showdown against motorcycle racing legend Valentino Rossi. The Italian icon has been competing in the championship throughout the entire season aboard a factory-backed BMW M4 GT3.

Beyond pure enjoyment, this outing acts as crucial preparation for Verstappen. It serves as valuable seat time ahead of his already confirmed return to the gruelling Nurburgring Nordschleife 24 Hours in 2027, while also allowing him to refamiliarize himself with the Portuguese venue ahead of its upcoming F1 Grand Prix return.
For the three-hour season finale, Verstappen will share driving duties in the #3 machine with a brand-new driver pairing compared to his previous outings. He will alternate stints in the cockpit alongside British talents Chris Lulham and Ben Barnicoat.
