Jorge Martin expressed his frustration after arm pump hindered his performance at the 2026 San Marino MotoGP. The Aprilia Racing rider believed he had the pace to battle Marc Marquez, but his physical condition deteriorated lap by lap, causing him to lose control of the bike.
Martin started the race impressively and even overtook Marquez after the start. "I really enjoyed the race. I felt very strong. The start was good. I thought Marc would pull away, but I was able to close the gap and even overtake him. I really enjoyed the race," he said.
However, arm pump began to set in after a few laps. Martin was initially able to maintain a 1:31 pace, but his condition worsened. "At one point the arm pump came, so I completely lost control of the bike. At first I could still hold 1:31s, but lap by lap it got worse. Unfortunately, I lost the chance to fight with Marc until the end," he explained.
This is not a new issue for Martin. He underwent arm pump surgery in 2019 and had not experienced similar problems since. Its recurrence at Misano was unexpected. Martin will consult with doctors and the team to determine the best course of action, including possible surgery after the Austrian Grand Prix.
"I don't know if surgery is the better option or not. We have to talk to the doctors and understand the recovery time. Austria will be a good test for my muscle and condition. After that we will see what happens," he added.
Martin's battle with Marquez at the top of the championship makes addressing this issue even more crucial. Martin stressed that his speed remains his main asset after fighting Marquez at Misano. However, with nine Grands Prix in 12 weeks, he must find a solution to stay competitive without sacrificing his physical condition.
The next focus is the Austrian Grand Prix, which will be a key evaluation of Martin's arm before any further decisions. If arm pump returns, surgery may be inevitable. One thing is clear: Martin does not want to lose the chance to fight at the front due to a physical issue.
