Marc Marquez has taken the MotoGP 2026 points lead for the first time this season after winning the San Marino Grand Prix at Misano. The victory puts him level on points with Jorge Martin, but he leads by virtue of having four grand prix wins to Martin's one.
The race was far from straightforward for Marquez. Starting from second, he faced immediate pressure from pole-sitter Marco Bezzecchi, who initially pulled away. However, disaster struck for Bezzecchi at Turn 13 on an early lap, crashing out and handing the lead back to Marquez.
After that, Martin looked the stronger of the two, passing Marquez at the Rio corner on lap seven. But his lead was short-lived as he faded, being overtaken by Marquez, Alex Marquez, Pedro Acosta, and Fermin Aldeguer in quick succession. Martin eventually finished fifth, well behind the leaders.
Up front, Alex Marquez kept close to his brother but never close enough to mount a real challenge. Marquez took the win by 0.657s over Alex, completing a Marquez 1-2. Acosta finished third, 2.3s adrift, with Aldeguer and Martin completing the top five.
The race was remarkably attritional. Besides Bezzecchi, several riders crashed out, including Jack Miller, Diogo Moreira, and a struggling Pecco Bagnaia. Joan Mir withdrew due to illness, Alex Rins retired in the pits, and Johann Zarco crashed late, leaving only 14 finishers.
Of those, Luca Marini was the top Honda in ninth, while Fabio Quartararo led Yamaha in tenth. The race highlighted the demanding nature of Misano, where consistency and resilience were key.
With this win, Marquez now leads the championship by a narrow margin over Martin. The title fight is heating up as the season progresses. Can Marquez maintain his momentum, or will Martin and others respond? We'll find out on track.
