Fabio Di Giannantonio can’t help but chuckle at the ongoing paddock debate over which tracks favour Ducati and which belong to Aprilia in MotoGP 2026. To him, that argument misses the point entirely.
The VR46 rider believes Marc Marquez’s recent form—five wins in the last seven races—has shattered the theory that track characteristics will decide the championship.
“In my opinion, looking for tracks that favour Ducati or Aprilia is something you journalists are particularly interested in, just as I used to hear people talk about ‘Honda tracks’ or ‘Yamaha tracks’,” said Di Giannantonio. “There are incredible riders at both manufacturers, and whoever does the best job wins. That’s the truth. Aprilia is doing a great job and has achieved great results on some tracks, but the truth is that Marquez is silencing everyone. It all depends on how you work on the bike.”
The theory isn’t unfounded. Aprilia’s RS-GP excels in fast, flowing corners, while Ducati’s GP26 thrives on stop-and-go circuits. As a result, the calendar seemed divided into races expected to suit one manufacturer or the other. But Marquez’s recent dominance has rendered that split meaningless.
Di Giannantonio himself was Ducati’s best performer for much of the first half, his consistency making him an outside title contender. However, since his Catalan GP win in May, he hasn’t returned to the podium on a Sunday. He now trails joint leaders Marquez and Jorge Martin by 51 points.
At Misano, he showed promise with fourth on the grid, but a poor start dropped him to 10th on the opening lap. He recovered to seventh, over 20 seconds behind race winner Marquez. It was a disappointing result given his pace throughout the weekend.
“We’re showing good, often excellent, speed at every track. It’s a shame about this weekend, though, because in my opinion we’d done everything right,” he said. “On Saturday, we were close to the front row in qualifying and then the podium, and on Sunday, I could have had a great race. We’ll arrive in Austria in a negative mood, but only because a series of negative things piled up. In my opinion, morale should be high. We’re fourth in the world championship and we’re doing a great job. So we’re heading to Austria in high spirits because we can do well.”
With a stop-and-go track like the Red Bull Ring next on the calendar, the ‘Aprilia vs Ducati track’ theory may resurface. But if Marquez continues his current form, the answer is clear: it’s not about the track, it’s about who’s best prepared.
