Luca Marini secured the fastest time in the first free practice session (FP1) of the 2026 MotoGP French Grand Prix at Le Mans. The Honda Factory Racing rider clocked a 1m30.857s, utilizing a fresh medium rear tire to edge out the field. This result signals a potential shift in momentum for the Japanese manufacturer after a challenging start to the season.
The performance gain is attributed to a revised aerodynamic package introduced by Honda following the post-race tests in Jerez. This new aero configuration focuses on enhancing front-end stability and optimizing airflow to reduce drag on the Le Mans straights. The efficiency of this update was further validated by Johann Zarco, who finished fourth despite using a 19-lap-old medium rear tire, indicating that the RC213V has found a more consistent grip window.
In response, Ducati deployed a new chassis for all its GP26 and GP25 machines. This chassis, which first debuted at Jerez, is designed to improve agility in the tight, slow-speed corners characteristic of the Bugatti circuit. Fabio Di Giannantonio and Pedro Acosta occupied second and third positions respectively, suggesting that while Honda has made a leap in aerodynamics, Ducati remains the benchmark in chassis balance and mechanical grip.

The session also marked the return of Jonas Folger, replacing the injured Maverick Vinales. While Folger finished 22nd, his return highlights the volatile nature of the grid. With Honda's aero updates proving effective in FP1, the focus now shifts to whether this pace can be maintained over a full race distance or if Ducati's chassis evolution will ultimately prevail.
