Marc Marquez finally finds himself back on top of the MotoGP world championship. After a dramatic victory at the San Marino Grand Prix, the Ducati rider admitted that leading the 2026 standings for the first time feels “unreal”.
The season did not start easily for Marquez. Injury woes plagued him early on, including a foot fracture at the French Grand Prix that forced him to miss a weekend for surgery. He also underwent a procedure on his right shoulder to correct a nerve issue that had bothered him since his crash at the Indonesian Grand Prix last October. Returning at the Italian Grand Prix in May, he was 102 points adrift of the championship lead and had all but written himself out of contention.
But everything changed. Wins in Hungary, Czechia, Germany, Aragon, and Misano completely erased that 102-point deficit. At Misano, capitalising on a crash for Marco Bezzecchi while leading and a difficult race for Jorge Martin who finished fifth, Marquez claimed his fifth win of the season and took the championship lead for the first time.
“Unreal. It feels unreal,” Marc Marquez said in parc ferme. “But never give up. I will push until the end. This is not done, but this is not over.”
Marquez now has 274 points, level with Martin, but leads the standings due to winning five grands prix to Martin’s one. Bezzecchi’s crash at Misano means he is now 33 points down on Marquez. Meanwhile, Aprilia’s difficult home race means Ducati now leads the constructors’ standings by two points over its Italian rival.
“We are there in the championship, fighting against very good riders, especially Martin and Bez,” Marquez continued. “But as we saw, everything is on the limit, and a small mistake can cost a lot of points. Today, after the Bezzecchi mistake, I was a bit too confident and then Martin attacked me. But then I regained the confidence, I kept the pace and happy because that 37 points here at Misano means a lot.”
With eight races remaining, the 2026 MotoGP title fight is heating up. Marquez has proven that nothing is impossible, and he is now in the position he has fought so hard for.
