The world rally championship WRC is gearing up for two major calendar returns, with the series heading back to both Britain and the United States following a prolonged absence from the global stage.
Behind the scenes, ongoing strategic initiatives driven by the championship promoters and motorsport governing body FIA have intensely focused on attracting a major Chinese car manufacturer, securing a championship round in China, or achieving both objectives simultaneously.
FIA Deputy President for Sport Malcolm Wilson emphasized that while he cannot publicly disclose the exact list of nations currently bidding to host a championship round, the level of global engagement is unprecedented.

What I can say, however, is that there is currently enormous interest in hosting WRC events, Wilson stated in recent paddock discussions reported by RallyJournal.
I have not previously been involved in the FIA or the promoter’s operations, but we are currently seeing a very high level of interest in new events.
Alongside the continuous push into the Chinese market, Argentina has also emerged in discussions as a viable host candidate, frequently rumored for an upcoming calendar slot.
Addressing the strategic value of different regions, Wilson noted that while the American round holds significant weight from a pure marketing perspective, the championship retains a diverse portfolio of strategic objectives.
Some of the places you mentioned are among them, but to be honest, we are also having some very interesting discussions with other parties, Wilson explained regarding the ongoing negotiations.
There are even some places I would never have imagined. I believe they could bring even more added value to the WRC in the future.
Although extensive evaluation work remains ongoing, the leadership maintains an open-door policy toward any credible organizers expressing genuine capability to stage a world-class rally event.
The work is still ongoing, of course. However, we are happy to talk to any potential WRC organisers who believe they can stage an event, he added.
Reflecting on the commercial trajectory and global appeal of top-tier rallying, Wilson expressed strong optimism for the future stability and growth of the series.
Yes, I believe everyone would agree with me. From the FIA’s perspective, the situation is very, very encouraging, Wilson concluded.
I believe this helps us all understand that we have started moving in the right direction. When there is this much interest, I think it shows that people are now beginning to see the true potential of the WRC.
