The Madring circuit's Formula 1 debut left much to be desired, with a distinct lack of on-track action. The Spanish Grand Prix venue, which hosted its first F1 race in 2026, saw very few overtakes, with some suggesting the number was even lower than Monaco's typically processional affairs.

According to The Race, Spanish Grand Prix chiefs are planning three key changes to the circuit for 2027 in a bid to improve overtaking. The move comes after drivers' worst fears were realized on Sunday, as passing proved ultra-difficult.

The main culprit was the Turn 5/6 chicane, which, despite being the most likely overtaking spot after a long straight, had a tight entry that deterred side-by-side racing. Ollie Bearman had warned about this before the race, saying, "That kind of curved braking takes away any possibility of different lines and sending one up the inside. So that's a shame and maybe a bit of an oversight."

The first planned change is to widen and alter the approach to the Turn 5/6 chicane, allowing cars to better contest positions. As proven over the Madrid weekend, the curved entry and kerbing layout left insufficient room for two cars to go cleanly side-by-side, making it easy to defend and forcing overtaking attempts to be overly aggressive.

The second area under review is the profile of Turn 13, the left-hander after La Monumental. Currently a medium-speed corner, it does not naturally lend itself to overtaking. Modifications here could create more opportunities for passes.

The third change is still being discussed, but talks between the circuit, the FIA, drivers, and teams are set to take place in the coming weeks to finalize details. While the overall Madring layout, including the banked La Monumental corner, was praised for its challenge in qualifying, the lack of passing places was evident.

Another factor was the lack of tire degradation on the hard compound, which limited strategic offset. However, the fundamental issue remains the circuit design. With these planned changes, Madring hopes to deliver more exciting racing in 2027.
