MAD-Coins: Cashless Payment System at F1 Spanish GP 2026

The 2026 Spanish Grand Prix at the new Madring circuit in Madrid will mark Formula 1's debut at the venue. However, there's a major change for fans attending the race weekend: a cashless payment system using MAD-Coins. From 11 to 13 September, all transactions within the circuit—food, beverages, and merchandise—will not accept traditional cash, debit cards, or standard digital wallets. Instead, spectators must exchange their money for MAD-Coins.

Each MAD-Coin is worth i1 and can be spent via a smart bracelet. Organisers have introduced three packages: the Basic Pack (i50 for 50 coins), the Pit Stop Pack (i100 for 100 coins), and the Full Throttle Pack (i150 for 160 coins—i150 for 150 coins plus 10 coins as a gift). There are no handling fees for purchasing packages online.

Fans can purchase MAD-Coins at the event or in advance through the official Madring website. Each purchase generates a QR code that can be linked to a smart bracelet at designated points inside the venue. With the bracelet, attendees can buy food, drinks, merchandise, and other experiences without cash or cards.

This system aims to speed up transactions and enhance the spectator experience. However, for some fans accustomed to conventional payment methods, adaptation may be required. They need to ensure their MAD-Coins balance is sufficient before making a purchase. Any unspent balance will be refunded after the race without fees, excluding free coins received through promotions.

This move aligns with the global trend towards cashless events, especially in major sports. Formula 1 has implemented similar systems at several grands prix. With Madrid as a new host, they aim to provide a modern and efficient experience for visitors. The Madring circuit itself is designed as a state-of-the-art facility embracing technology.

For fans planning to attend, it's important to understand this mechanism to avoid surprises on-site. Be sure to purchase MAD-Coin packages well in advance, either online or on-site, and remember to link the QR code to your smart bracelet. That way, you can focus on enjoying the race without worrying about payments.

The 2026 Spanish Grand Prix will be the 14th round of the season and a historic moment as F1 races at Madring for the first time. Beyond on-track competition, innovations like MAD-Coins demonstrate how organisers are striving to deliver a better viewing experience. We'll have to wait and see if this system will be adopted at other grands prix in the future.
