The damage from one of F1’s most infamous crashes

Throughout the rich history of Formula 1, specific dates in the past have witnessed three completely different yet equally unforgettable world championship showdowns across distinct decades. The fierce intra-team battle between Niki Lauda and Alain Prost at the 1984 Portuguese Grand Prix opened a chapter of memories regarding the dramatic 0.5-point margin.

The 1984 season presented an intense internal rivalry inside the McLaren garage. Niki Lauda arrived at the final round holding a narrow 3.5-point advantage, although a qualifying disaster forced him to start down in 11th place while Alain Prost lined up on the front row in second. Lauda later recalled discovering team merchandise celebrating Prost's expected championship triumph prior to the race, which served as ultimate motivation to leave everything on the track.

Although Alain Prost won the race itself, Niki Lauda fought back to finish second, which was enough to secure the title by a mere 0.5 points—the closest championship finish in Formula 1 history. This outcome was heavily influenced by the half-points awarded earlier in the season following the red-flagged Monaco Grand Prix.

Six years later, the 1990 season escalated tensions to unprecedented heights between Alain Prost, who had since switched to Ferrari, and Ayrton Senna at Suzuka. As the lights went out, Alain Prost utilized the cleaner P2 slot to sweep into the lead, but Ayrton Senna refused to back down. Approaching Turn 1 without touching the brake pedal, Senna plowed straight into the rear of Prost's Ferrari, sending both contenders spinning into the gravel trap and automatically handing the world title to the Brazilian.
