Arvid Lindblad did not hide his frustration with his own performance at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The Formula 1 rookie described the Baku weekend as one of the toughest of his season so far, especially after crashing in FP2 and making several mistakes in qualifying.
Lindblad, who has impressed throughout his debut season, ended up slowest among the Q2 runners. That was his second-worst result of the year. He admitted that being too aggressive in practice shattered his confidence.
“I have no confidence, to be honest,” Lindblad said. “Crashing yesterday doesn't help. I'm running a different car to Liam, as you'd expect when you crash, so that doesn't help. I've missed mileage as well, I missed the start of FP1, start of FP2 and then I crashed, I missed basically all the rest of it.”
The FP2 incident occurred when he carried too much speed into the narrow castle section and slammed heavily into the outside wall. It was his second consecutive FP2 crash after a similar incident in Madrid. As a result, he had to run a slightly older specification of parts compared to his Racing Bulls teammate Liam Lawson, who had the new front wing.
Lindblad realised that his main issue was weekend management. “I'm just mad at myself because, more than anything, in trying to be too special I've hurt my trajectory for when it matters and I haven't delivered in the moment,” he said. “I enjoy being able to sort of switch off the brain and just send it when it matters, but this week I haven't really been able to do that.”
On the other side of the garage, Lawson also struggled and could only manage 12th. He complained about a lack of engine performance compared to other midfield teams, which made the Racing Bulls car difficult to handle especially under braking. “We're just trying to make up time that is not really there and it's really tough,” Lawson said.
Nevertheless, Lindblad remains optimistic about bouncing back. He is determined to improve his approach for the rest of the season. “There's stuff for me to learn on how to approach these weekends and manage them in a little bit of a better way,” he concluded. With nine top-10 starts from 14 races, he still has the foundation to return to his best form.
