Uncertainty hangs over Liam Lawson's future on the 2026 Formula 1 grid. Despite delivering a series of impressive performances throughout the season, the New Zealander is still awaiting a definitive decision from Racing Bulls regarding his seat for next year.
Lawson has consistently placed himself in point-scoring positions this year, currently sitting ninth in the drivers' standings. He stands out as the leading performer outside of the dominant top-four teams. However, his tenure is under pressure from F2 title protagonist Nikola Tsolov, who made a notable FP1 debut in Mexico.
Former F1 driver and senior pundit Martin Brundle has weighed in on the situation, describing the sport as a "brutal business." Speaking to Sky F1, Brundle remarked: "That's very strange, isn't it? He's done such a great job, he's scored so many points. They're comfortably fifth in the world championship."

Brundle continued: "But this is a brutal business, and you get a chance to drive an F1 car because somebody else has been kicked out." His comments reflect the volatile nature of the driver market, echoing the recent upheaval seen with Esteban Ocon's departure from Haas following the Mexico incident.
Regardless of the eventual decision from Racing Bulls, Brundle remains adamant that Lawson’s F1 career is far from over. He believes Lawson has done enough to prove his worth on the grid. If the seat at Racing Bulls does not materialize, Brundle is confident that a role as a 'super sub' or a slot at another team will open up quickly for the 24-year-old.
"Liam has done enough to stay in F1. If he's not got that job, he'll either be a super sub, or he'll get a slot quite quickly somewhere else. He's been outstanding this year, but it depends on what the team wants to project for the future," Brundle concluded.
