A busy week for Liam Lawson. After a surprise comeback at the Dutch Grand Prix, the New Zealander was back behind the wheel of a Red Bull at Mugello on Wednesday for a Pirelli tyre test. His presence was notable, as he filled in for the injured Isack Hadjar just days earlier.
The opening day of the two-day test took place in scorching conditions, with track temperatures peaking at 55 degrees Celsius. The focus was on developing tyres for 2027, so raw performance was not the priority. Lawson completed 116 laps (608 km), predominantly on the C2 compound, starting with repeated eight-lap runs before extending his stints in the afternoon.
Meanwhile, Oscar Piastri covered 93 laps (488 km) for McLaren, setting a best time of 1:21.358s while evaluating the C1, C2, and C3 compounds. His program concluded with two 14-lap runs. Lawson's fastest lap was 1:22.297s, but times were secondary as Pirelli gathered comparative data.
Lawson's appearance at Mugello came just days after his return to the senior Red Bull team at Zandvoort, where he qualified eighth and finished seventh—his first points for the team in 2025. Red Bull is hopeful Hadjar will recover for the Italian Grand Prix, but no decision has been made yet.
Testing continues on Thursday, with Lando Norris taking over McLaren duties and Ayumu Iwasa driving for Red Bull. Audi will also join, with Nico Hulkenberg scheduled to drive.
