Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Liam Lawson has suggested that Sergio Perez is “still not over” losing his seat at Red Bull after the pair engaged in a heated on-track battle during the 2026 Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park in Melbourne.

The incident unfolded after Lawson suffered a poor start from the grid and spent much of the race battling in the lower midfield. During that phase of the race, the Racing Bulls driver encountered Perez, who was competing for Cadillac as the American manufacturer made its Formula 1 debut.

The two drivers fought aggressively on track, with minor contact leaving damage on the left side of Perez’s Cadillac. Race stewards briefly investigated the Mexican driver for allegedly forcing Lawson off the circuit, although no penalty was issued.

Lawson ultimately finished the race in 13th position, while Perez crossed the line in 16th during Cadillac’s first appearance in Formula 1. Despite the relatively low positions, Lawson suggested that the intensity of the battle felt unusually personal.

“Yeah, I mean, two years later he’s still not over it,” Lawson told media, including RacingNews365.

“It was like he was fighting me for the world championship, and we’re P16.”

“My race was already over at that point, so I didn’t really care too much.”

Lawson added that while the duel was aggressive, he did not believe Perez had done anything illegal during the encounter.

“There was nothing illegal. He was aggressive, but honestly I don’t care,” Lawson said.

Perez, however, downplayed the confrontation and described the exchange as an enjoyable part of racing despite driving a less competitive car.

“For me it was just racing,” Perez explained.

“It was a bit of fun racing, and I was in a much slower car, so it was enjoyable to fight.”

The duel between Lawson and Perez provided one of the more animated midfield battles during the season-opening Australian Grand Prix, highlighting the competitive intensity across the field as the 2026 Formula 1 championship moves toward its next round.
