Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Lewis Hamilton entered the 2026 Formula 1 season with renewed momentum alongside Scuderia Ferrari, following a difficult debut campaign that saw him finish without a podium.
After three challenging seasons with Mercedes-AMG Petronas, particularly under the ground-effect regulations introduced in 2022, Hamilton made a strategic switch to Ferrari in an effort to reset the final phase of his career. However, his first season with the Italian team marked an unprecedented downturn, as the seven-time world champion failed to secure a single grand prix podium across the year—an anomaly in his 19-season tenure in Formula 1.
That performance led to increasing scrutiny from paddock observers and commentators, many of whom questioned whether Hamilton’s competitive edge had diminished. The latest regulatory shift, introducing a 50-50 balance between combustion and electrical energy, has since provided a critical turning point. Ferrari’s new package has proven more compatible with Hamilton’s driving style, allowing him to extract stronger performance compared to the previous generation of cars.

Hamilton’s resurgence became evident at the Chinese Grand Prix, where he secured his first podium with Ferrari on his 26th attempt. The result marked a key milestone, indicating that both driver and team had begun to align competitively. Heading into the Miami Grand Prix following the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian rounds, Hamilton currently sits fourth in the drivers’ standings, just eight points behind team-mate Charles Leclerc.
“When you go through difficult years, there are always questions from all directions,” Hamilton said in an official Formula 1 interview.
“I saw certain individuals who haven’t achieved anything close to what I have, continuing to speak negatively. It feels good to come back this season, start strong, and show that I still have what it takes to compete at the front.”
Beyond individual performance, Hamilton highlighted the positive impact of the regulation changes on overall car behavior. One of the defining issues of the previous era was porpoising, which significantly affected stability and driver confidence. With that issue largely eliminated, the competitive focus has returned to pure performance and development efficiency across the season.
“It’s great to start the season without bouncing. The previous generation of cars was a nightmare for most teams, except maybe Red Bull Racing. Now it’s back to pure car performance,” he explained.
Hamilton also emphasized the importance of technical collaboration and development direction within Ferrari this season. Unlike the previous year, where development efforts were limited by the car’s baseline concept, Ferrari is now able to optimize its resources more effectively. Hamilton’s regular presence at the Maranello factory has played a key role in shaping development priorities, particularly in aerodynamics and power unit efficiency.
“This is exactly what we needed. Last year, there was no point in having deep technical discussions because the car simply wasn’t competitive. Now we can plan and develop with clear direction,” Hamilton added.
From a competitive standpoint, Ferrari has established a more stable position in the constructors’ battle, supported by consistent contributions from both Hamilton and Leclerc. However, the primary challenge remains teams such as Red Bull, known for their in-season development strength. With a dense calendar ahead and a critical development phase approaching mid-season, Ferrari’s ability to sustain its performance trajectory will be decisive.
Hamilton’s recovery has not only reshaped his individual narrative but also reinforced Ferrari’s position in the championship fight. With the points gap still manageable in the drivers’ standings, upcoming races—starting with Miami—will be crucial in determining whether this resurgence can be sustained into a genuine title challenge.
