Lewis Hamilton has dismissed Max Verstappen's suggestion that their battle during the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix warranted a penalty, insisting the incident was simply hard but fair racing.

The Ferrari driver climbed into second place after overtaking team-mate Charles Leclerc during the opening laps. However, Ferrari's tyre degradation soon allowed Verstappen to close rapidly, setting up one of the race's most entertaining wheel-to-wheel battles.

The Fight Began on Lap 11

Verstappen launched his first attack at Turn 3 on lap 11 with a late move down the inside. Hamilton responded by cutting back through Turn 4 before the pair ran side by side towards Turn 6.

As the battle continued, Verstappen ran onto the gravel after running out of room on the inside and immediately informed Red Bull over team radio that Hamilton deserved what he described as a "clear penalty".

The incident was noted by the stewards but, after reviewing the footage, race officials decided no further action was necessary, allowing the battle to stand as a legitimate racing incident.

Hamilton Saw Nothing Wrong

Reflecting on the duel afterwards, Hamilton described the battle as enjoyable and insisted both drivers had simply been racing hard within the limits.

"It was great. Good run, good fun," Hamilton said.

When informed that Verstappen believed he should have received a penalty, the seven-time world champion quickly rejected the suggestion.

"He went around the outside. You don't expect to go around the outside of a champion. I wouldn't expect to go around the outside of him there and hold the line," Hamilton replied.

The Stewards Shared Hamilton's View

The decision not to penalise Hamilton effectively supported his interpretation of the incident. Verstappen eventually completed the overtake a few laps later before finishing second, while Hamilton gradually dropped back as Ferrari's tyre performance faded, eventually crossing the line in fifth.

Although the battle ultimately had little influence on the final podium positions, it provided one of the highlights of the Austrian Grand Prix and demonstrated that both former title rivals remain willing to race aggressively whenever they meet on track.

An Old Rivalry Rekindled

The latest encounter between Hamilton and Verstappen revived memories of their previous championship battles, although this time without any post-race sanctions. Their differing opinions over what constitutes acceptable wheel-to-wheel racing once again became a major talking point after the chequered flag.

With Formula 1 heading next to Silverstone, another direct battle between Hamilton and Verstappen will remain one of the most anticipated storylines if the pair find themselves fighting for position once again.
