Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Lewis Hamilton revealed that damage to his front-left tyre ended his chances of winning the Sprint race at the 2026 Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai. The Ferrari driver eventually finished third after an intense early battle with George Russell.

Hamilton started the sprint from third on the grid and quickly moved into second after an aggressive move on Lando Norris at the opening corner. The momentum continued when he seized the race lead from Russell with a bold overtake at Turn 9 during the opening lap.

The two former Mercedes team-mates exchanged positions multiple times in the early laps. However, the intense fight placed heavy stress on Hamilton’s tyres, particularly the front-left, which ultimately compromised his race pace.

The tyre degradation allowed team-mate Charles Leclerc to move ahead, while Hamilton briefly lost position to Norris before pitting during the safety car period.

After returning to the track, Hamilton managed to pass Norris again to reclaim third place, securing a podium finish. However, he was unable to challenge Russell or Leclerc during the closing stages of the sprint race.

“Yeah, mega job. It’s amazing, and a big thank you to the team for putting us in this position, fighting with the Mercedes at the front,” Hamilton said after the race.

“It was a close battle at the beginning. Their straight-line speed is just a little bit too much at the moment, but I think I put up a good fight.”

Hamilton explained that the decisive factor was the damage sustained to his front-left tyre during the early duel.

“But I killed my left tyre, so I wasn’t able to hold on to the position,” he added.

Despite missing out on victory, the British driver viewed the sprint as another encouraging sign for Ferrari under the current power unit regulations. Hamilton indicated that he feels increasingly comfortable with the car, which he helped develop alongside the Maranello-based team.

“I don’t know exactly what suits me about it, but it’s just a much better car that we designed and that I’ve been part of developing,” Hamilton said.

“So I’m definitely much happier in it. I was leading at one point, so finishing third is not the greatest, but I’ll try harder again tomorrow.”

The Sprint result demonstrates that Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari remain close challengers to Mercedes during the Chinese Grand Prix weekend. With the full-length race still to come in Shanghai, the battle at the front is expected to continue between the leading teams.
