Lewis Hamilton was forced to swallow a bitter pill and openly apologised to the Scuderia Ferrari garage after making a crucial strategic error during the Formula 1 grand prix. The seven-time world champion elected to ignore pit wall instructions and stayed out on track during a Virtual Safety Car period triggered on Lap 39 following Lance Stroll's retirement. This independent decision ultimately caused his promising track position to completely unravel in the closing stages.

The controversial call originated when Ferrari instructed both of its drivers to pit for fresh rubber. While Charles Leclerc followed the directive and completed his second stop smoothly, Hamilton insisted on continuing with the soft compound tyres he had fitted earlier in the race. This gamble temporarily propelled the British driver into second place behind eventual winner Max Verstappen, but the tactical miscalculation soon caught up with him.

However, that temporary advantage vanished rapidly as rivals on fresher tyres began slicing through the field. Leclerc reclaimed position ahead of his teammate on Lap 46, and Hamilton's pace deteriorated severely as he attempted an astonishing 44-lap stint on the soft compound. Mercedes youngster Kimi Antonelli easily overtook him for third on Lap 54, with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri also capitalizing on his fading grip in the final eight laps.

Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur confirmed that the choice to stay out came directly from Hamilton rather than the pit wall, admitting that the team missed a golden opportunity to secure a lucrative double podium finish in second and third place. Vasseur added that Saturday's wet sprint race left the Maranello outfit completely blind regarding true tyre degradation over a long grand prix distance.

Crossing the line in sixth place after losing three positions late in the race, Hamilton shouldered full responsibility over team radio. Speedcafe reports that the veteran racer immediately owned up to his mistake on the cooldown lap. “Sorry, boys. I let you down today with that strategy. My call, and I lost us valuable points. I’ll try and make up for it in the next one,” Hamilton confessed to his engineers.
