Lewis Hamilton says he has achieved a dream of emulating Michael Schumacher

The qualifying session at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez during the Mexico City GP weekend turned into an emotional milestone for Lewis Hamilton. The veteran British driver secured the top spot by edging out his former Mercedes team-mate, George Russell, by a mere 0.009 seconds. This remarkable feat ended a three-year wait for a grand prix pole position, with his last one dating back to the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Achieving his first pole since joining F1's most famous team also marks the 105th pole of his legendary career. At 41 years of age, the seven-time world champion became the oldest driver to top a qualifying session since Mario Andretti achieved the feat for Ferrari at the Italian Grand Prix. This historic statistic further cements his enduring brilliance amidst the fiercely competitive modern grid.

Following the intense session, the iconic #44 driver could not hide his overwhelming emotions. He admitted that his latest milestone with the Scuderia immediately brought back vivid memories of watching his childhood idol dominate the sport during his golden era.

"It has been a long time since I think I have sat in this spot. I don't really remember the last time I had a pole. Embarking on this journey with Ferrari and all the challenges and ups and downs we have had, my belief in this team has never wavered," Hamilton said in the post-qualifying press conference.

"I think just the opportunity that they are giving me and the faith they have put in me as well. It feels great to be able to reward them with a pole. And to have your first Ferrari pole, I mean, jeez, it just takes me back to watching Michael get all those pole positions when he was with Ferrari, and all those wins. So it is very, very special," he added.

Speaking to media outlets, the British star emphasized that he has successfully fulfilled a lifelong dream shared with his family since his early days of watching races from the living room sofa.

"To get the pole, finally get a pole for Ferrari, just takes me back to when I was a kid and sitting on the sofa and watching Michael get those poles, thinking how cool would it be to do that? It was a dream my family have shared with me and I know so many people in the world grew up watching Michael," Hamilton expressed.

"To be at this point of my career and still have this special feeling—105, the number doesn't mean much in a sense, it feels like the first. I spoke a couple years ago about getting to have a first. It feels like when you get to 40 they are all gone, but I am having those firsts this year and I am in a really good place," he concluded.

This sensational qualifying performance provides a massive morale boost for the Maranello-based squad ahead of the main race. Sound strategic execution and tyre management under the unique high-altitude conditions of Mexico will prove crucial as the championship protagonist aims to convert his pole position into a historic victory.
