Charles Leclerc is not shying away from responsibility. The Ferrari driver openly admitted that he was at fault for the contact with Lewis Hamilton at Turn 2 on the opening lap of the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. The incident sent Hamilton spinning onto the gravel and cost him several positions, sparking a storm of controversy both inside and outside the paddock.
“I know I exaggerated at Turn 2, I told Lewis that,” said Leclerc in the Ferrari hospitality, as quoted by FormulaPassion. “The rules of engagement on track are quite clear. We never want to see a car from the same team end up on the grass. After analyzing what happened, I spoke with Lewis. It's very clear what we should and shouldn't do in the future.”
The incident occurred at the most sensitive moment: Ferrari's home race, where all eyes were on the Maranello team. Leclerc fully understands that any mistake gets magnified. “If there's one race where you don't want something like this to happen, it's Monza. When it happens at your home race, chaos outside is inevitable,” he added.
Nevertheless, Leclerc refused to add fuel to the fire. He stressed that his relationship with Hamilton remains intact and will not be affected. “We talked, I told him how I felt, he told me how he felt. With cooler heads, we agreed on what needs to be done. This won't affect anything going forward. That's the most important thing,” he stated.
Leclerc also pointed out that friction between teammates isn't unique to him and Hamilton. “I watched the race replay and saw there was also tension between other teammate pairings. But only me and Lewis are being discussed. I don't think that's entirely fair,” he said. “It doesn't mean we did everything perfectly. I didn't at Turn 2, and after reviewing the footage, I was immediately honest with Lewis.”
When asked about Hamilton's move at Turn 1, Leclerc chose not to escalate the polemic. “I don't want to talk about it because it might seem like we're just bickering. We're not. The most important thing is that we've sorted it out,” he concluded.
With this clarification, Leclerc hopes the focus will return to Ferrari's performance. He also confirmed he is ready to race in Madrid next weekend, with no physical issues from the Monza incident. Now, Ferrari's task is to ensure their driver pairing's chemistry remains solid for the rest of the season.
