Charles Leclerc will not use Ferrari's latest engine specification at the Spanish Grand Prix this weekend. The decision follows his crash at the Italian Grand Prix last week, which left his 067/6 power unit still undergoing thorough checks.

Ferrari had introduced the new engine spec at Monza, featuring the second package of modifications permitted by the FIA. The team's engineers deemed the unit structurally sound, but they were unwilling to risk running it at the new Madring circuit. Formula 1 regulations prohibit running an engine that cannot be inspected across all its homologated components. Although no cracks or breakages were found in external checks, the team plans more detailed X-ray examinations to detect any minor damage that might have been missed.

The decision not to risk the ADUO2 engine in the Spanish capital is logical. Madring is a new circuit where drivers need maximum running, and engineers must gather data to finalise a setup that balances slow and fast corners. Additionally, Madrid sits 667 metres above sea level, similar to the Red Bull Ring in Austria. With thinner air, the larger turbo compressor in the ADUO2 package could have provided a performance gain. However, any minor power unit issue during Friday practice could compromise race preparation, so the engine's return is postponed until FP1 in Baku.

Consequently, Leclerc will use an ADUO1 engine, while Lewis Hamilton can continue with the ADUO2. Trackside staff will assess the actual performance difference between the two specs. Although not openly discussed, especially after the Monza disappointment, there is an ambition within the team to perform well in Madrid. The track may suit the SF-26's characteristics: medium-to-high aerodynamic downforce is required, and the asphalt is not expected to offer high grip, which could favour cars with excellent corner-exit traction.

Downforce is likely to matter more than efficiency, and additional flaps on the movable wing actuators may reappear. Ferrari should be less affected by the power deficit to Mercedes. However, with the older engine, challenges remain. The team must maximise its aerodynamic package and strategy to challenge at the front.
