LCR team boss Lucio Cecchinello has insisted that MotoGP's revamped qualifying format for the 2027 season will not be as dangerous as some have feared, arguing that strict tyre limitations will instead foster much deeper strategic intrigue.
Speaking during a world feed interview, the former racer and IRTA teams' association president shed light on the subtleties of the hotly-debated 2027 format. Under the new structure, both Friday's Sprint Qualifying and Saturday's Q1 will see all 22 riders fighting for lap times in a single 15-minute window, raising initial concerns over traffic and safety implications.
"This will be managed by the fact that the number of tyres available are not unlimited," Lucio Cecchinello stated when addressing the stressful nature of the session. "There will be just one set of tyres for the 15 minutes of sprint qualifying, which is already limiting the number of fast laps."

This marks a significant departure from current Friday procedures, where riders routinely bolt on fresh rubber multiple times during the closing stages of Practice sessions, which essentially act as a preliminary qualifying phase under the present rules.
"So we will see strategies where teams are waiting before going out or the teams are deciding to go out immediately to avoid any potential risk of getting yellow flags," Lucio Cecchinello explained. "So I believe that this will also be thrilling - how teams will manage the strategy with their own riders."
Saturday's tyre allocation will likewise face reductions, with competitors dropping from four sets down to three sets across Q1 and Q2. These sweeping format adjustments stem directly from the teams' own initiatives, proving that every aspect has undergone thorough deliberation ahead of the upcoming regulatory era.
