TO NEWS OVERVIEW
Latvala fears if Evans hadn't won this year, he might never have

Last weekend left a deep emotional memory for Jari-Matti Latvala in the World Rally Championship arena. On one hand, the Japanese manufacturer celebrated a massive milestone by claiming its seventh drivers' championship from the last eight seasons. However, on the other hand, a tragic drama unfolded in the final corner just before the finish line, changing everything in a split second.

The sweet victory secured by Elfyn Evans came at the cost of immense heartbreak suffered by Oliver Solberg. The dramatic failure happening just 200 meters before the end instantly transformed the atmosphere in the team garage into a stark contrast between joyous celebration and devastating mental collapse.

Reporting from DirtFish, the Toyota team principal admitted that the moment was the biggest test of his management career. "I have to say it's been probably the hardest day of my career being a team principal," Jari-Matti Latvala stated. Confusion struck as he tried to navigate supporting everyone while balancing the celebration of a new world champion with consoling a heartbroken driver.

Without taking sides, the team boss's first instinct was to approach Oliver Solberg's car directly at the powerstage stop-line before joining any celebrations with Elfyn Evans. "Oliver was completely devastated. He was crying and, you know, he wasg you can see that, you know he had everything in his hands and he lost it, and he was so devastated," Latvala recalled regarding the emotional state of his young driver.

Meanwhile, the heavy mental burden carried by Elfyn Evans finally paid off after years of relentless effort and finishing as championship runner-up five times. Latvala believes the immense workload put in by his driver over the years brought the rightful championship reward, which will ultimately lift heavy psychological pressure and make him even stronger and more relaxed in future world rally campaigns.
