Lando Norris Wins 2026 Hungarian F1 GP After Oscar Piastri Backmarker Drama

Lando Norris claimed his first victory as the reigning world champion in the 2026 Hungarian Formula 1 Grand Prix after an incident involving Oscar Piastri and a backmarker transformed the battle for the lead.

Norris led out of Turn 1, but a small mistake at Turn 2 allowed Piastri to move into first place. The Australian controlled the opening phase as the two McLaren cars gradually pulled away from Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton.

Hamilton, who started on the soft tyre, triggered the pit-stop sequence on lap 13 and briefly undercut Verstappen. The Red Bull driver immediately reclaimed the position with a late-braking move into Turn 1.

Piastri remained ahead of Norris following the first stops. The situation changed when Norris recovered from running wide at Turn 4 on lap 29 and closed back onto his team-mate. He then requested either permission to pass or priority in the second pit-stop sequence because he believed he had stronger pace.

McLaren still called Piastri in first at the end of lap 33. He returned to the circuit in fifth and was required to negotiate traffic from drivers running longer strategies.

The decisive moment arrived on lap 39 when Piastri caught Oliver Bearman and Carlos Sainz while they were battling. Sainz’s Williams moved across the McLaren’s path at Turn 2, causing contact and almost sending Piastri into a spin.

The incident cost Piastri several crucial seconds. Norris stopped at the end of the same lap and emerged immediately ahead of his team-mate to claim the net lead of the Grand Prix.

Norris then passed the off-sequence Kimi Antonelli to take the lead on track. He began to build a gap, confirming his belief that he possessed the stronger pace during the final stint.

Piastri’s opportunity to respond ended on lap 56 when his gearbox failed. The technical problem forced him to retire and triggered a virtual safety car, ending McLaren’s chance of securing a one-two finish.

The VSC allowed Norris, Hamilton and Charles Leclerc to make pit stops with a reduced time loss. Norris remained in control at the restart, while Hamilton briefly moved ahead of Antonelli before returning the position following their pit-exit battle.

Norris completed the 70-lap race with a 15.080-second advantage over Verstappen. Antonelli secured third after resisting Hamilton’s pressure during the closing stages.

Hamilton crossed the line in fourth but was demoted to fifth by a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane. The sanction promoted Leclerc to fourth in the final classification.

Isack Hadjar finished sixth, while George Russell recovered to seventh after a poor launch dropped him to the rear of the field when the anti-stall system activated. Liam Lawson, Nico Hulkenberg and Arvid Lindblad completed the points-paying positions.

Hulkenberg’s ninth place delivered his first points of the season for Audi. Gabriel Bortoleto finished immediately outside the top 10.

Alongside Piastri, both Cadillac drivers retired. Sergio Perez suffered a suspension problem, while Valtteri Bottas stopped after his front brakes caught fire.

The Hungaroring victory gives Norris important momentum heading into the summer break. Piastri’s retirement after leading the opening half demonstrated how strategy, backmarker traffic and reliability can overturn a race within only a few laps.
