Lando Norris has declared that he believes he can beat Max Verstappen or any other driver on the Formula 1 grid in equal machinery. His comments followed reports linking Verstappen with a possible move to McLaren.
The speculation intensified after Verstappen’s representatives were reported to have initiated discussions with the Woking-based team. However, no contract negotiations have been officially confirmed, while McLaren CEO Zak Brown has stated that the team is not attempting to sign the four-time world champion.
Brown stressed that McLaren does not have a third car and already has two drivers capable of delivering the required results. Norris and Oscar Piastri are also tied to long-term contracts, meaning any Verstappen arrival would require a major change to the team’s current line-up.

Norris believes he has improved since fighting the Red Bull Racing driver for the championship last season. He explained that the different characteristics of the 2026 car have required changes to his driving technique and a greater ability to adapt to varying conditions.
“I certainly think I’ve improved compared to last year. I also feel like I’m a more complete driver and able to adapt more to different situations, driving styles and the characteristics the car requires,” Norris said.
“I do believe I can beat any driver,” he added.
Despite his confidence, Norris acknowledged that Verstappen’s main strength extends beyond outright speed on a single lap. He identified the Dutchman’s ability to perform consistently across practice, qualifying and races throughout an entire season as the quality that separates him from most competitors.
“A lot of drivers can get a pole and put in incredible laps. What makes people great is performing at that level in every practice, every qualifying session and every race,” Norris said.
Norris would also welcome the opportunity to compete directly against experienced champions such as Lewis Hamilton or Fernando Alonso in equal equipment. He views such a situation as an opportunity to measure himself against drivers recognised among Formula 1’s elite.
A Norris-Verstappen partnership nevertheless remains speculative. Until McLaren, Verstappen or Red Bull announces an official decision, the Norris-Piastri pairing remains the foundation of the team’s project, while Norris’ comments demonstrate that he would not avoid the challenge of facing Verstappen in identical machinery.
