Ahead of the 2026 Mexican Grand Prix, reigning World Champion Lando Norris has paid glowing tribute to Kimi Antonelli as the Italian closes in on his maiden Formula 1 world crown. This commanding position comes directly on the back of a stellar victory at the United States Grand Prix held at Austin.
Although the championship celebrations were briefly delayed on Texan soil due to resilient drives from the chasing pack, that haul of points made a maiden championship crown an absolute formality heading into the latter stages of the calendar. The sheer pace shown throughout the rounds has left very few doubts about his ultimate supremacy this year.
Should he seal the championship formalities this weekend at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, he will shatter the long-standing record previously set by Sebastian Vettel back in 2010. It also marks a historic return to glory for Italian motorsport at the absolute pinnacle of single-seater racing.
Speaking to media personnel in Mexico City, Lando Norris expressed deep admiration for the massive leap forward taken compared to a solid yet transitional rookie campaign last season. "I think it’s very impressive what he’s been able to do at his age, in his second year in Formula 1, and he’s going to be the youngest world champion ever," the McLaren driver stated.
Furthermore, praise was directed towards the impressive internal battle against teammate George Russell, highlighting the remarkable lack of mistakes under immense pressure during qualifying and race simulations alike.
