The Mexico City GP qualifying session once again exposed the unpredictable performance woes plaguing the McLaren camp in the latter stages of the season. British driver Lando Norris had to settle for sixth on the grid, finishing three-tenths of a second adrift of the pole position time. This result stood in stark contrast to his teammate's struggles, which saw a shock elimination in Q2. Having enjoyed a strong surge in form around the summer break, the Woking-based outfit has slipped back down the order and remains without a podium finish in the last four Grands Prix.

The core issue consistently highlighted by the defending champion is that his car remains far too unpredictable when executing single-lap pace, a trait that reared its head once more at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. Norris candidly admitted that the erratic speeds produced by his machinery often defy logic and leave him scratching his head inside the cockpit.

"We're just not quick enough, the car's too difficult to drive," Lando Norris told media members. "Maybe one in 50 I can put together, and everyone says, 'Oh, you've got a good car.' But it's not true. My Q2 lap, I just had an amazing headwind in Turn 12, gained one and a half tenths, just because the car brakes."

Such fine margins highlight the treacherous nature of handling the current aerodynamic package, where success and failure are separated by a razor-thin threshold. On the subsequent section of the circuit, attempting an identical entry speed immediately triggered a snap of oversteer and erased all previous gains.

"The next half, I try and go the same speed in, I lose the rear, I lose a tenth, so I got a two and a half tenths delta to my previous. It's just too difficult, especially when it's like the onboards from others. It baffles me how we can be quick sometimes," he explained regarding the technical hurdles faced during the timed runs.

The compounding struggles endured by Oscar Piastri throughout the session served as clear evidence of how arduous it is to piece together a competitive lap with the current package. Rather than lamenting the missed opportunity at the front row, the British racer expressed genuine satisfaction with salvaging a spot on the third row.

"I don't think anything slipped away, just the lap I did was pretty phenomenal in the car that we have. It shows where Oscar is and the struggles we've been having, how difficult it is to put a lap together in this car. So I'm pretty happy with a P6, honestly. You never really know what you're going to get," he concluded.
