Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Lando Norris has acknowledged that McLaren is not yet in an optimal position to fight for the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship following the conclusion of pre-season testing. The reigning world champion stressed that significant performance gains are required ahead of the season opener.
The Woking-based outfit completed a relatively smooth test programme without major reliability concerns, but its outright pace did not stand out compared to its direct rivals. With Formula 1’s steep development curve expected to play a decisive role this season, Norris remains confident that McLaren’s technical structure can close the gap in the early rounds.
Norris enters 2026 as defending champion after narrowly defeating Max Verstappen in the 2025 title battle. While that success provides psychological momentum, he underlined that a new campaign presents fundamentally different challenges.

"Honestly, I don't think there's a responsibility… I mean, there's a responsibility always in life," Norris said to media including RacingNews365.
"But I'll do my best to defend it and continue it. But it's a new season with loads of new challenges. So it's not as simple as just continuing from last year and saying it's the same thing again.
"At the minute we have to, from what we see, improve the car quite a bit if we want to compete a bit more, to be confident for the first race."
Despite the current limitations, Norris stated that securing his maiden world title last season has elevated his self-belief to a new level. The experience of managing a tight championship fight is seen as a critical asset heading into a long and technically demanding campaign.
"I feel confident. I feel better than I've ever done.
"Certainly, after last year and winning the championship last year, that's given me the confidence.
"So it's reassuring to know that I've done it once and therefore I believe I can do it again. So that's a good thing.
"But it's a long season, and I'll make sure I do my part. And together as a team, we'll make sure we give ourselves the best opportunity to do it again."
With aerodynamic development cycles and upgrade timing expected to shape the competitive order in the opening flyaway races, McLaren’s response in the first phase of 2026 will determine whether Norris can realistically mount a sustained defence of his title or face renewed pressure from his closest rivals.
