Kimi Antonelli successfully extended his championship lead in the 2026 Formula 1 season after securing a sensational victory at the Circuit of the Americas. Surprisingly, this sweet result emerged from a garage situation plagued by panic following a dismal performance during Friday practice.
Mercedes trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin candidly admitted that the setup window for the W17 car is incredibly narrow. Early telemetry indicated the Brackley squad was lagging far behind and faced a miserable weekend without meaningful points due to an awkward aerodynamic upgrade package.
However, the tireless work from engineers in Brackley and Brixworth paid off through the brilliant drive of the young Italian phenom. Shovlin described the Austin win as an absolute miracle given how sluggish their pace looked early in the race weekend.

Despite the triumph, complex setup issues continued to plague teammate George Russell, who struggled in the midfield following an opening lap penalty and traffic battles. Shovlin noted that thorough evaluations will continue to ensure both cars achieve consistent performance moving forward.
As reported by Motorsport.com, flawless pitwall strategy under intense tyre degradation pressures proved to be the decisive factor for Antonelli's dominant charge to the top step of the podium in Texas.
