Formula 1 tension reached a boiling point following a controversial practice collision between world champion Max Verstappen and rising driver Liam Lawson during the second practice session at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. The dramatic side-by-side clash through the stadium section immediately drew fierce reactions from pundits and former racers alike.

The stewards did not let the incident slide, handing both drivers a one-place grid penalty for Sunday's grand prix alongside a single penalty point on their respective super licences. This fiery on-track encounter carried extra weight given their ties within the broader Red Bull racing family structure and their past status as teammates during previous rounds.

Speaking to F1 TV, former grand prix winner Juan Pablo Montoya analysed the duel by noting that Lawson was fully entitled to stand his ground when Verstappen attempted an aggressive lunge. Montoya explained that while Lawson's late braking move was necessary to defend his racing line, Verstappen's counter-action escalated the battle significantly.

Providing his trademark unfiltered paddock perspective, Montoya went a step further regarding how he would have handled the situation from the cockpit of the Red Bull machine. The Colombian veteran bluntly stated that had he been in Verstappen's shoes, he would have forced his rival straight into the tyre barrier rather than yielding an inch of asphalt.

Meanwhile, former IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe weighed in on the fallout, describing Verstappen's aggressive retaliation as completely unnecessary, especially considering the costly floor damage inflicted on the championship leader's car which severely hindered critical telemetry data gathering ahead of qualifying.
