MotoGP, Sportrik Media - Jorge Martin faced challenges at the MotoGP San Marino 2025 due to a sighting lap issue, forcing a pit lane start and two long lap penalties. The Aprilia Racing rider finished 13th but believes a top-six result was achievable without the setback. He emphasized the need to find an RS-GP setup tailored to his style, distinct from teammate Marco Bezzecchi’s configuration, as he looks to the Misano test for progress.
Technical Issue Hampers Performance
Martin encountered a technical problem during the sighting lap, requiring him to start the warm-up lap from pit lane, which led to two long lap penalties. “We need to understand what happened,” he told MotoGP.com about the issue. Despite finishing 13th, he felt a top-five or top-six finish was within reach. “It was a good opportunity to make a strong top-six, top-five – that was my target,” he noted.

Despite the setback, Martin found positives in the race. “Every day I feel a bit better with the bike. Today was a good opportunity to understand where to improve because I was riding alone for many laps,” he said. This allowed him to identify areas for enhancement, particularly when comparing his performance to Bezzecchi, who secured second place after winning the Sprint and taking pole.
Different Setup from Bezzecchi
Martin revealed that his bike setup differs from Bezzecchi’s, who excelled at Misano. “Compared to Marco, we have different bikes. For sure, his bike is working for him; I need to make a bike that works for me,” he explained. This highlights his ongoing adaptation to the Aprilia RS-GP, seeking a configuration that suits his riding style. “We are on that path,” he added, underscoring his commitment to refining his setup with the team.
Bezzecchi, supported by the VR46 Academy, demonstrated Aprilia’s potential, but Martin requires a distinct approach to unlock his best performance. This process is a priority as he heads into the Misano test.
Misano Test: A Chance to Progress
The official test on Monday following the race is a pivotal moment for Martin. “I’m really happy that tomorrow we have a test because it’s really important,” said the Aprilia Racing rider. It marks his first official in-season test of 2025, having only completed 13 laps at the Sepang test before crashing. “It will be my first official test, let’s say, with the MotoGP bike this season. This will help me to grow, to make a step forward,” he added.
The test offers Martin an opportunity to experiment with setups, aiming to enhance comfort and speed. With a focus on tailoring the bike to his needs, he hopes to elevate his performance for the remaining 2025 races, starting with Japan.
Despite a technical hiccup and penalties at MotoGP San Marino 2025, Jorge Martin remains optimistic about his progress with Aprilia. The upcoming Misano test is crucial for refining his bike setup, distinct from Bezzecchi’s successful configuration. With consistent improvement and collaboration with his team, Martin is poised to achieve stronger results in the season’s latter stages, solidifying his status as a top MotoGP contender.
