The Lusail International Circuit paddock buzzed with anticipation as Jorge Martin officially returned to action during the opening Free Practice session of the 2026 Qatar Grand Prix. After being forced to sit out the Malaysian Grand Prix due to a wrist fracture, the championship contender's return is under the microscope. However, Aprilia Racing team boss Paolo Bonora provided an update that was as encouraging as it was cautiously measured.
Martin currently sits 44 points behind championship leader Marc Marquez. To keep his title hopes alive, Martin must ensure he does not lose more than 30 points to the Ducati rider this weekend. During FP1, Martin secured fifth place, finishing 0.734s adrift of the pace set by Marquez, who looked formidable under the Lusail floodlights.
Paolo Bonora noted that Martin's physical state is significantly improved compared to his struggles in Sepang. "Yeah, it seems better, but we have to be very careful because we need more time to have him at his 100% physical condition," Bonora explained. He noted that while changes of direction on the bike felt much better, Martin is still battling discomfort during hard braking maneuvers.

Fortunately, the layout of the Lusail circuit offers some respite, as it does not feature many sectors requiring heavy, sustained braking. The team has been clear in their instructions: "Take your time," Bonora noted, emphasizing that they are not willing to take unnecessary risks with their rider's health.
Martin’s resilience remains a key theme of the weekend. While the title chase is increasingly difficult, the team’s resolve remains unshaken. "Until the numbers no longer give us the possibility, we will never give up," Bonora stated. The team is looking for a positive weekend, bolstered by the steps forward taken by Marco Bezzecchi throughout the season, but they remain pragmatic about the physical limitations Martin is currently managing.
As the weekend progresses, all eyes will be on whether Martin can close the gap to the front-runners. With the unique challenges of the Qatar night race, including tire degradation and track surface conditions, every bit of data will be vital for Aprilia in their quest to challenge the dominant Ducati factory effort.
