Jorge Martin endured a bitter pill at the San Marino MotoGP 2026. Starting from the front, the Aprilia Racing rider led the race before fading to fifth due to recurring arm pump. The incident immediately sparked speculation about a possible surgery for the 2024 world champion.
The 27-lap race at Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli was dramatic. Martin, starting from the front row, immediately attacked and overtook Marc Marquez in the early laps. He built a small lead and looked comfortable at the front. But disaster struck not from a rival, but from his own physical condition.
“I had a big problem with arm pump,” Martin said after the race. “It's a shame, because I think we missed a big opportunity today. I felt very good and started strongly. I thought Marc would pull away, but I got closer and took the lead.”
Mid-race, Martin's right arm began to lose strength. He struggled to brake and open the throttle, his rhythm fell apart, and his position dropped. Marquez capitalized to take the win and equal Martin's points in the standings. For Martin, it was a heavy blow as he had felt victory within reach.
Arm pump is nothing new for Martin. Back in 2019, he underwent surgery to fix the issue and had been free from symptoms for years. Now, the ghost of the past haunts him again. “I had it in 2019 and had surgery. After that I never had it again. I've seen other riders have it return after years and sometimes need another operation. Maybe that's the case for me, maybe not,” he explained.
Making matters worse, the 2026 MotoGP calendar is brutally packed. This weekend, the Austrian Grand Prix awaits, followed by Japan, Indonesia, Australia, Malaysia, Portugal, and Valencia. “Right now I have no time to do anything,” Martin stressed. “I need to recover well and focus on Austria. After that we must understand what to do and whether surgery is needed. There are many races coming up.”
Nevertheless, Martin affirmed his determination to fight for the title. His speed and feeling with the Aprilia RS-GP give him confidence, but physical uncertainty casts doubt. “I don't want to lose this chance,” he concluded. “I feel ready to fight for the championship.”
With this condition, Aprilia Racing and Martin must soon make a tough decision: continue racing with the risk of arm pump recurring, or undergo surgery that could sacrifice several rounds. One thing is certain, the 2026 MotoGP title fight heats up with off-track drama that could shape the season.
