Irish driver Jon Armstrong has openly shared his aspirations to secure his motorsport future in the premier World Rally Championship class for the 2027 season. Having earned a hard-fought promotion to a Rally1 seat with M-Sport for the 2026 campaign following an impressive runner-up finish in the ERC, the talented competitor is now mapping out his strategic next moves.

The 2026 WRC season proved to be an arduous journey filled with obstacles, culminating in a season-best seventh-place finish at the dramatic season-ending Rally Sardinia. Despite the struggles, the Irishman flashed immense raw pace during the Acropolis Rally Greece, where he captured the maiden stage win of his top-flight career on the fifth special stage.

Unfortunately, that momentum was abruptly halted on the very next stage when consecutive punctures struck alongside a troublesome turbo issue, completely shattering any hopes of securing a strong overall result in Greece. Such misfortunes highlighted the relentless and unforgiving nature of top-tier rally competition.

Having spent virtually his entire professional career aligned with the British outfit, the driver made it clear that a change of scenery is firmly off his radar as he values familiarity and technical understanding.

“I definitely would like to stay with M Sport because it’s where I’ve been my whole career, and I know the Fiesta very well,” Armstrong told DirtFish. He further emphasized his desire to contribute technically, stating, “Hopefully I could also be involved in shaping the development of the new car to the WRC27 regulations.” While acknowledging this as his most viable path, he remains open to evaluating other suitable offers if they materialize.

Given historical trends where securing consecutive years in the team's top-tier seat has rarely propelled drivers forward—with Adrien Fourmaux standing as a notable exception—contract talks remain ongoing. Until ink meets paper, Armstrong maintains cautious optimism about locking down a vital second year at the pinnacle of rallying.
