Johann Zarco endured a difficult 2026 French MotoGP weekend after the LCR Honda rider could only finish 11th at Le Mans. After showing strong pace on Friday, Zarco admitted that a crash during FP2 became the turning point that affected both his confidence and race rhythm for the remainder of the event.
The French rider returned to Le Mans carrying significant expectations following his emotional wet-weather victory at the circuit in 2025. Uncertain weather forecasts initially raised hopes of another competitive weekend for Zarco and Honda. However, the momentum built during Friday practice disappeared after his Saturday morning crash.
Before the incident, Zarco had topped Friday’s Practice session and demonstrated encouraging progress from the RC213V package, particularly in braking stability and front-end confidence. Following the FP2 crash, however, Zarco struggled to fully trust the front tyre during high-speed corner entry, directly limiting his ability to brake aggressively and apply throttle consistently on corner exits.

“It was a tough weekend. It wasn’t the performance we wanted. The little crash on Saturday morning affected my confidence, and once you lose a bit, you lose it everywhere,” Zarco said.
Zarco explained that during Sunday’s race he focused more on staying on the bike rather than pushing for outright speed. That limitation became especially visible in dry conditions, where he lacked the race pace required to challenge inside the top group, in contrast to the exceptional wet-weather performance he produced one year earlier.
Despite the disappointing result, Zarco still identified positive signs from Honda’s overall performance at Le Mans. He believes the RC213V remains capable of strong results when rider confidence and setup conditions align correctly. That assessment was partially supported by the pace shown by Joan Mir, who had looked capable of another top-six finish before crashing out of the grand prix after taking sixth in the sprint race.
Beyond the technical issues, Zarco also acknowledged that his physical preparation across the weekend contributed to the performance drop. Approaching his 36th birthday, the French rider admitted he underestimated the importance of active recovery sessions and physiotherapy treatment during the grand prix weekend.
According to Zarco, physical condition plays a much greater role during dry races because of the significantly higher energy demands and bike control requirements compared to wet conditions. That evaluation is expected to become an important focus for Honda heading into the Catalan Grand Prix, where Zarco aims to recover consistency while continuing to support the development of the RC213V during the middle phase of the 2026 MotoGP season.
