James Wharton has finally found his home for 2027. The young Australian driver has officially signed with Trident to compete in Formula 2, stepping up after two full seasons in Formula 3. The confirmation ends months of speculation about his future in the junior ranks.
Wharton, now 20, is no stranger to Trident. The Italian team gave him his F2 debut at the penultimate round of the 2025 season in Qatar. Drafted in at Lusail to replace Martinius Stenshorne, he partnered Laurens van Hoepen. Although his results were underwhelming—a sprint race retirement after contact with van Hoepen and a 19th-place finish in the feature race following a pit-lane mistake and track limits penalty—the experience laid important groundwork.
The 2026 season marked improvement for Wharton in F3. After moving from ART Grand Prix to Prema, he scored eight points finishes, doubling his previous tally. His points total jumped from 25 to 39, and he ended the season with a podium in Madrid after winning the sprint in Barcelona. His strongest form came in the latter half of the year, scoring in four of the final six races.
“I really can’t put into words what this opportunity for 2027 means to me,” Wharton said. “To be able to return to Trident after racing with them in 2025 is something really special. We worked very well together and they are a very prestigious team. I’m looking forward to joining the team and continuing to work hard with them over the winter, so that we can arrive in 2027 in the best possible shape.”
Trident team manager Giacomo Ricci welcomed Wharton’s arrival. “He is undoubtedly a highly talented driver, and he has successfully progressed through all the top junior categories, consistently showing that, whenever given the opportunity, he has the ability to compete at the front,” Ricci said. “We are very happy to begin this journey together. 2027 will be James’ rookie season in Formula 2, and we will do everything we can to give him the best possible preparation.”
For Wharton, this is a logical step in his career. After two seasons in F3, he will now test his skills at the highest level before F1. Trident, known as a solid team in F2, will be the right place to hone his racecraft, especially in dealing with higher tyre degradation and more complex pit stop strategies.
With limited F2 experience, Wharton must adapt quickly. However, the working relationship established in 2025 is a valuable asset. He will also have the winter to prepare physically and mentally. Given his upward trajectory in F3, it’s not impossible that Wharton could be a surprise in F2 2027.
The move also underscores that Trident is serious about building a competitive young squad. By re-signing James Wharton, they hope to challenge at the top of the F2 standings. Meanwhile, for Wharton, this is a stepping stone towards his Formula 1 dream.
