James Vowles Reveals Major 2027 F1 Regulation Changes

James Vowles has revealed that Formula 1 will introduce fairly significant aerodynamic regulation changes for the 2027 season, covering the bib, rear wing and several sections of the car floor.

The Williams team principal explained that the revisions will limit the amount of development that can be carried over from the 2026 cars. Teams will not be able to retain their current aerodynamic concepts in full because several major areas will be adjusted again for the following season.

“The rules are actually changing aerodynamically for next year, and they’re fairly significant. There’s changes around the bib, the rear wing, some of the floor area,” Vowles told Sky F1.

The aerodynamic revisions will be introduced alongside changes to the power unit regulations. The current 50:50 split between internal combustion and electrical power will move to 58:42 in favour of combustion in 2027 before shifting further to 60:40 from 2028.

The revised ratio is intended to reduce the need for energy management, particularly harvesting, which has limited the drivers’ ability to attack throughout an entire lap. Super-clipping has been one of the main concerns because electrical deployment can fall away significantly on certain sections of a circuit.

Vowles believes the aerodynamic revisions mean that knowledge gained during the current season cannot be transferred completely to the 2027 cars. However, he stressed that the changes are being introduced for valid reasons.

Formula 1 teams must now balance the development of their current cars with preparations for the next technical revision. The detailed impact of the changes to the bib, rear wing and floor will become a major focus as the 2027 regulations begin to influence car design.
