Italy Tops Car Theft in Europe, LoJack Recovers 1,230 Vehicles

Italy has once again been identified as the European country with the highest risk of car theft. Recent data from LoJack for the first half of 2026 reveals that the company helped recover 1,230 vehicles, with a total value exceeding 46 million euros. This marks a 20% increase compared to the same period in 2025, underscoring that the issue remains a serious concern.

According to LoJack's report, Italy leads the negative ranking. Based on data from Berg Insight, in 2023 Italy recorded approximately 132,000 stolen vehicles, far ahead of France (71,000), the UK (64,000), Spain (31,000), and Germany (30,000). The trend has not abated over the years, and theft methods are becoming increasingly sophisticated, often leaving no signs of forced entry.

Interestingly, SUVs are the primary target. In the first half of this year, SUVs accounted for 60% of all recovered vehicles. LoJack explains that this surge is driven by black market demand for spare parts and resale abroad. The most recovered brands in this segment are Toyota, followed by Peugeot and BMW. Overall, the most recovered brands are Toyota, Fiat, and Mercedes-Benz.

Geographically, Campania remains the region with the highest number of recoveries, followed by Puglia, Lazio, Lombardy, and Piedmont. These five regions account for 88% of total findings. However, there is good news: 83% of vehicles were found within the first 24 hours after the theft report, while only 3% were found between 24-48 hours, and 14% after two days. The average time from report to recovery is 10 hours.

The 20% increase in recoveries demonstrates the effectiveness of LoJack's technology, but it also indicates that car theft remains a profitable industry for criminal syndicates. With increasingly advanced methods, vehicle owners in Italy are urged to be more vigilant and use additional security systems.

While Italy is in the spotlight, car theft also affects other European countries. However, data shows that Italy has the highest theft rate, calling for more decisive action from authorities and vehicle manufacturers.

LoJack itself remains committed to helping recover stolen vehicles, and these figures are concrete evidence that tracking technology can make a difference. However, without greater prevention efforts, this cycle appears set to continue.
