The dramatic final-lap fuel shortage that robbed Anton De Pasquale of victory at Bathurst has sparked intense analysis throughout the Supercars paddock. While comparisons were immediately drawn to past heartbreak suffered by Jamie Whincup, the operational misstep that befell Team 18 stems from internal software calculations and a delayed tactical response rather than driver defiance.
Following an internal review, the team confirmed that the investigation identified an issue within the team's fuel strategy software, resulting in the final fuel fill being less than the amount required to finish the race. Rather than a direct glitch, the root cause lay in the calculator assuming a full tank during the penultimate stop, overlooking a deliberate short-fill strategy.
The strategic gamble executed on lap 123 was initially designed to vault the Camaro past Will Brown and allow the driver to hunt down race leader Zach Bates. Although the stop itself was executed cleanly by the crew, the predetermined refuelling duration fell roughly three seconds short of the field average due to the flawed pre-written formula.

Compounding the error was the time it took the engineering group to recognise the discrepancy. While rival garages and television commentators questioned the margins, team leadership remained outwardly confident until ten laps remaining, when cautious fuel-saving radio messages were belatedly transmitted to the cockpit.
By the time the full scale of the miscalculation became apparent to the pit wall, viable options had evaporated. Instructions to implement maximum fuel conservation arrived too late on the final stretch, sealing a heartbreaking conclusion to an otherwise stellar campaign at Mount Panorama.
