Inside Colton Herta Cadillac F1 Audition and How He Compared to Sergio Perez

Colton Herta found himself facing a crucial moment in his motorsport career as he stepped into a Formula 1 cockpit for Cadillac. Despite a bizarre administrative calculation error regarding his superlicence points, this latest outing served as a vital audition to secure a race seat for next year, with the team going beyond mandated rookie requirements to give him crucial track time.

Rather than simply cruising around to fulfill the 100-kilometer requirement, Herta was handed an extensive run plan. This program closely mirrored the run plan given to Sergio Perez, offering a direct benchmark against a seasoned F1 veteran should Herta secure a permanent spot on the grid.

Herta opened his FP1 session with an 11-lap stint on hard tyres, clocking a best lap of 1m22.452s, which put him 1.067s slower than Perez on identical rubber. While Herta felt he was leaving performance on the table in the first sector, telemetry actually revealed he was faster there than Perez, with time bleeding away instead in the second and third sectors.

Transitioning to medium tyres, Herta executed back-to-back stints following a minor front wing microadjustment. It was during his second run on seven-lap-old tyres that he posted his personal best of 1m21.365s. In contrast, Perez managed his fastest time on fresher, three-lap-old tyres during his initial medium run.

Navigating low-speed corners proved to be a significant learning curve, with Herta noting big understeer across slow sections and losing crucial minimum speed approaching the stadium complex. Despite these hurdles, the extensive program provided invaluable data for both driver and team as his F1 evaluation continues.
